The Adam Project

The Adam Project is its name, nostalgia is its game and thanks to the re-teaming Free Guy duo of director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Reynolds, it does it well. A time-traveling adventure reminiscent of 80’s classics like E.T. and Back to the Future, Reynolds latest is at its best when it is tugging on your heartstrings or embracing the comedic patter the Deadpool actor is so well known for, in a way that succeeds far more than many of his recent projects, thanks to the addition of newcomer Walker Scobell. It is when The Adam Project feels the need to tick the Netflix blockbuster boxes that it is let down; with awfully trite villains, forgettable action set-pieces and a story that never gives characters outside of the central pair much time to breathe.

Struggling to return to a sense of normalcy after his father was killed a year ago, 12-year old Adam’s (Walker Scobell) life is thrown into chaos with the arrival of his older self from the year 2050. Injured and desperate to find his missing wife Laura (Zoe Saldana), this older Adam brings with him the threat of Sorian (Catherine Keener), a woefully underwritten big bad who made a fortune off the invention of time-travel, stolen from Adam’s father Louis (Mark Ruffalo). Realising the only way to prevent Laura’s disappearance is to stop the invention of time-travel altogether, the two Adams journey back to 2018, before their father died, in a last-ditch attempt for the trio to save the day and right the wrongs of the future.

On its surface, The Adam Project is the typical big-budget Netflix blockbuster. All the glossy bells and whistles have been thrown onto the screen in the action sequences, drawing from a host of obvious sci-fi action influences, and it all feels for naught. The action has such a clean and polished look to it that you never feel as if the characters are truly in danger, with Ryan Reynolds leaping around like a CGI rag-doll with a lightsaber. I’ve no doubt it may be the most spectacular thing in the world for a child who hasn’t seen the myriad of films these scenes are a hodgepodge of – and for a film so obviously emulating the Amblin movie spirit that’s a great thing – but for everyone else this aspect is easily the film’s weakest. For its part, the time-travel mumbo-jumbo is quickly dismissed as just that, acting to kickstart the adventure before fading away into the background.

After a slew of post-Deadpool Ryan Reynolds films where his rapid-fire wit has almost become a crutch at this point, The Adam Project is a rousing success in revitalising that comedic energy to hilarious effect. This is primarily due to Walker Scobell as the younger Reynolds, who is fantastic in capturing his wise-cracking smartassery in an endearing way. The problem that has frequently befallen many of Reynolds films is that no one is ever a real match in keeping up with his quick wit, so it makes sense that the best person to go toe-to-toe with Adam is… Adam. It’s a charming dynamic that never fails to put a smile on your face every time Scobell’s Adam comes back with an absolute zinger, also working as a kind of deconstruction of Reynolds schtick, turning it on its head and making him look like a fool more than once. It’s refreshing for an actor of his calibre to be so receptive to poking fun at his image, especially when that image essentially launched his leap to superstardom.

Where The Adam Project really succeeds – like Levy’s other Netflix project Stranger Things – is in its ability to evoke nostalgia to such an all-around endearing effect. From the production design of Adam’s childhood home to the music choices and even certain fashion choices, it all feels designed to evoke classic 80’s family and sci-fi films like E.T. and Return of the Jedi. That might seem like a surface-level coat of paint but Levy doesn’t forget to take the best parts of those films and apply it to his own: the heart. For a film that could be seen as a forgettable action romp, The Adam Project packs a surprising amount of depth into it, tackling issues of abandonment, resentment and unresolved father issues. Seeing the Adams and their father reunite makes for some flashy action set-pieces sure, but more importantly allows for some serious deep-diving into how Louis’ death has impacted his son at different points in his life and how the young Adam can directly impact his future. It’s the heavy, emotionally fulfilling stuff hiding under the surface that will surely leave the adults in the room with a tear or two while the young ones are busy having enjoying the fireworks.

The Adam Project both is and isn’t something of a surprise. As a big Netflix action film it hits every note it needs to with little we haven’t seen before, weighed down by a nonsensical story and poor villain. But – looking beyond that – this is a film with a surprising amount of heart, and one that completely revitalises the Ryan Reynolds formula thanks to a great pairing with up-and-comer Walker Scobell. As a wannabe Amblin, 80’s style action comedy, Levy knows exactly which buttons to hit, and while you won’t be yearning to travel back in time to experience this for the first time like some of its influences, The Adam Project is a fun enough throwback.

Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard

Do you remember the throwaway action flicks of the mid 2000’s? Films like Mr and Mrs Smith or Sahara that you immediately know by reputation or the poster but couldn’t remember a single scene of if pressed? That’s the category that Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard falls into: a truly unmemorable action flick that has a few funny scenes and is entertaining in the moment but one that you will never think about again after watching. That’s not necessarily a bad thing – there is a place for those kind of easy watches that don’t require much brainpower, but the Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is such a mindless cash grab, completely wasting its all-star cast in a mess of a story that it is hard to recommend to even the most easily pleased audience members.

Following his successful thwarting of Belarussian dictator Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman) in the previous film, the now former AAA rated bodyguard Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) has taken a sabbatical, retreating to an island resort in an attempt to clear his mind of the trauma he endured saving master criminal Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson). That peace is soon interrupted in spectacular fashion as Kincaid’s wife Sonia (Salma Hayek) bursts onto the scene, on the hunt for her husband who has been kidnapped by local gangsters. Once the trio is reunited the real story takes shape, as they are approached by Interpol and charged with taking down Aristotle Papadopolous, a corrupt billionaire who has taken it upon himself to save his beloved Greece by sabotaging the European Union’s power grid, essentially destroying Europe.

From here the film is non-stop bickering as Reynolds and Jackson are left to go at each other, with Reynolds given free reign to improvise and spew out jokes, some of them good, some of them not, none of them staying in your mind long enough to be processed before the next comes flying out. It’s easily the best aspect of the film, with a tongue-in-cheek tone that never takes itself too seriously (there’s even a hilarious call-out to Reynolds many well-known business ventures outside Hollywood). To call it a parody of other self-serious films in the action genre might be a step too far however, as director Patrick Hughes doesn’t seem to have any insightful commentary to make in that regard, rather falling on the conventions of the genre in the laziest way as a skeleton for the jokes to be built around. The only time that structure is ever changed is if it lends itself to a zany concept or intricate joke laid by Reynolds and those vary in their quality greatly.

The most divisive of these centres around the character played by Morgan Freeman. It’s an incredibly juvenile laugh that is plain to see as soon as it is announced, but Reynolds and Jackson dance around it for the next five to ten minutes, extending the joke to ridiculous proportions without ever introducing a new punchline. Reynolds acts as something of a double-edged sword in this regard. He is the heart of the film and carries almost every single scene with his madcap energy and constant quipping but in doing so prevents anyone else around him from having all that much to contribute. It’s a shame then that his character undergoes the least change, essentially ending the film as he started it where other characters with far more going for them are left with rushed arcs that don’t really allow for much emotional resonance. Salma Hayek tries her damn heart out with a truly over-the-top insane performance as the gun-toting, foul-mouthed assassin, constantly fighting with her hitman husband but desperate to have his baby. There are a couple of scenes where she tries to deliver some genuine emotion but these are quickly swept away in the wake of a Reynolds punchline. Jackson’s character is also overshadowed in this manner and proceeds on autopilot, while the great Antonio Banderas is barely even seen: a true waste.

Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard really doesn’t have much to offer its audience outside of acting as the Ryan Reynolds show. If you’re a fan of his public persona, full of subtle jabs and self-deprecating digs, then you will likely find some enjoyment in watching him do just that for 100 minutes. Unfortunately the film fails in every other aspect, with Reynolds overshadowing his talented cast in a clunky, rote adventure that likely landed its stars a lavish holiday whilst providing the audience little more than something to look at for a while. There is a reason these types of films died out in the 2010’s: for every solid little gem that offers true mindless escapism that audiences love there are twice as many hollow, pay-check makers that leave your consciousness as soon as they enter.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Pokémon is a franchise that has been in my life since I was a child. I’ve played all the games as they’ve come out and watched the show religiously every morning. So it’s fair to say that I was equal parts excited and nervous about the series first foray into live-action cinema. The possibilities were endless, but why base the movie on a spin-off game majority of the franchise devotees had avoided? I’m happy to report that I was wrong. Pokemon Detective Pikachu is a great entry point into the live-action Pokémon world that, despite a somewhat paint-by-numbers story, always manages to leave you in awe at the creature realised on the big screen.

Let’s start with the most important point: the Pokémon. A lot of work has clearly gone in to redesigning these creatures to live in the real world. From the more prominent like Charizard, Bulbasaur and the little furry detective himself, to the lesser known like Rufflett and Octillery, a ridiculous amount of attention to detail has been utilised here to make each individual Pokémon seem like a living, breathing part of the environment. I never stopped being wowed by each new creature that stepped into frame and I found myself constantly scanning each scene for hints of new Pokémon. The visual effects team has done a marvellous job and it is a testament to their work that, in a film whose primary draw is to see these monsters realised on screen, this is easily the best and most rewarding part of the movie: trying to catch ’em all as you watch.

What isn’t as jaw dropping, however, is the story. Pokemon Detective Pikachu centres around the disappearance of Harry Goodman, the father of our protagonist Tim (Justice Smith) and partner to Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds). In order to deal with his father’s disappearance, Tim travels to the utopian Ryme City, a place where Pokémon and people live in harmony. He soon teams up with the talkative Pikachu, who he can mysteriously understand, and the two embark on a journey to unravel the mystery of what happened to Harry. Along the way Tim and Pikachu meet up with plucky young investigative reporter Lucy Stevens (Kathryn Newton) and her Pokémon partner Psyduck, a headache stricken duck who explodes if his stress levels rise. The story is all a bit basic, with twists and turns you can see coming from a mile away. What makes it forgivable though, is that it’s really just an excuse to see a range of Pokémon in their unique environments. While this may seem like an excuse, the cast, especially Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu, imbue the story with enough heart to get you through the somewhat lazy writing and on to the next big Pokémon reveal.

Reynolds shines as the titular detective, bringing the same level of humour and heart that he gives to his Deadpool character, albeit toned down here for a PG rating. His jokes, while they feature no swearing, will largely go over most kids heads and are there for the parents. However there are still plenty of jokes and slapstick humour for the little ones, making it a great choice for a family film, instead of something darker like Avengers: Endgame. The motion capture work done by Reynolds is top-notch, with Pikachu conveying a wealth of different facial expressions, whilst always remaining a believable, adorable little Pokémon. Justice Smith gets a chance to prove his acting chops here after a pretty lacklustre turn in last year’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Rather than scream at the sight of anything remotely scary, Smith gets more to work with here – allowing him to show some emotional range as someone who feels abandoned by his father and who has isolated himself from the world and those around him, including Pokémon, as a result. It’s a testament to his acting that he is never overshadowed by Reynold’s yellow furball, holding his own and showing some quality comedic timing – the scene involving the Pokémon Mr. Mime in particular is hilarious, showing some strong physical comedic acting.

Kathryn Newtwon seems like she is in a different movie the first time we see her, playing the intrepid news reporter character very over-the-top, almost to the level of an anime character from the television show. She seems to have a better handle on the character the next time we see her and soon comes to play a major role in the proceedings. Where the acting gets really schlocky, however, is with Bill Nighy and Chris Geere’s father/son philanthropist duo Howard and Roger Clifford. It’s clearly a paycheck movie for Nighy, who channels about a tenth of the intensity from the Pirates of the Carribbean movies, and you can’t help but feel that he doesn’t really have an understanding of what he’s saying when it comes to Pokémon. Geere is, not to put too fine a point on it, ridiculous, making Kathryn Newton’s first appearance seem like she was in The Godfather. The way he delivers his dialogue and his physical acting in scenes is so over the top I was having trouble not laughing out loud at how bad the acting was. Apart from that, Ken Watanabe gives a solid performance as the police chief of Ryme city, and the pairing of him with the grumpy dog Pokémon Snubbull was a stroke of genius and leads to some of the best jokes in the film.

As an introduction and proof of concept of a live-action Pokémon world, Pokémon Detective Pikachu works wonderfully well. Despite a somewhat bland, obvious plot and some shoddy acting, Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith and the army of VFX animators give you enough to fully invest in the world and the main relationship between Tim and Pikachu. I was always engaged by these two characters and was willing to go where the story took them, even if it did get a bit ridiculous at times. As a lifelong Pokémon fan, I was awestruck that my childhood had come to life on the big screen and I had a smile on my face for the entire runtime. I’m willing to forgive a few small missteps in story and acting if it means we get to spend more time in this world.
